Fabulous Winter Warmers | Written By Paula Joye

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

Winter dressing is fun.

I love it when the temperature drops just enough and I can start to layer my clothes.

There are lots of new, fun cover-ups this season – most work day to night – that will help update your favourite basics just by throwing them over the top.

Here’s my pick of the best shapes – permission to go nuts.

The Waterfall Vest.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore
This is for those days when it’s not too hot, not too cold and you’re looking for just right.

A longline vest is very versatile because you can wear it corporately (as I have here) or throw it over jeans on the weekend.

It will also work under a cropped blazer or long coat if you want to layer it up.

CLICK TO BUY: Black Pintuck Shirt, $39.95 from Katies; Fit & Slim Black Jeans, $19.95 from Katies; Grey Marle Waterfall Vest from Katies (currently sold out but will be back in stock from June 15); Patent Pumps from Saint Laurent.

The Blanket Wrap.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore
This is essentially like wearing your bed to the shops.

So snug and easy – this is the thing you throw on when you don’t know what to to throw on.
Plus I’m a sucker for tartan. Or anything British.

And it’s practically free.

CLICK TO BUY: Check Wrap, $49.95 from Katies; Alexa Chung from AG Cream Jeans, $326 from Matches Fashion; The Dingo (hat), $99.50 from Fallen Broken Street.

The Duffle.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore
Paddington Bear is a style icon.

Duffle coat, gum boots, school case… they’re all classics.

Traditionally a heavy duty coat, duffles are best reserved for casual.

On weekends, school run, travelling …these guys are your best friend.

I love the touch of faux fur on the hood.

Pretty and practical.

It also comes in a great soft grey…so maybe you need both?

CLICK TO BUY: Black Duffle Coat, $119.95 from Katies; Distressed Skinny Jeans, $59.95 from Katies.

The Maxi Cardi.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore
Soft, floaty, comfy – what other adjectives do you need?!

Sometimes long cardigans can be shapeless, but you can always fix this by adding a belt. Cinched high at the waist will change the silhouette from relaxed to more dressy.

Choose a skinny belt with this medium weave and wear it over a pencil skirt for a classic, chic look.
My favourite companions for a maxi cardigan are a simple white t-shirt, a pair of blue jeans and ballet flats – it’s a great fall-back outfit to have in your wardrobe.

CLICK TO BUY: Longline Chunky Cardi, $59.95 from Katies; White V-neck T-shirt from Bassike, Distressed Skinny Jeans, $59.95 from Katies; Nude Ballet Flats from SamBag; Ray-Ban Aviators, $207 from ASOS.

The Soft Coat.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore
Long coats are the reason to get out of bed in winter.

Flattering and forever chic, they pull any and all outfits together like ribbon on brown paper.

This season don’t just wear your coat for day because in the evening they really come into their own.

Ball gown, cocktail dress…just make sure that the coat hits the bottom of the thigh or longer to give a long, lean shape.

I love the colour and cut on this coat.

And also…wear pink.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore
CLICK TO BUY: Pastel Long Coat from Katies, $119.95; Vintage Cocktail Dress (my own), Christian Louboutin So Kate Pumps in Nude, $896.95 from Saks Fifth Avenue.

The Poncho.

poncho2
The poncho is to winter what the the kaftan is to summer.

Just switch your swimsuit to a pair of jeans.

I like to wear them loose but if you want a little more shape then you can belt it (fine leather this season, nothing chunky) just at the bottom of your rib cage to give you a nice A-line finish.

CLICK TO BUY: Poncho Knit, $49.95 from Katies; Distressed Skinny Jeans, $59.95 from Katies; Ray-Ban Aviators, $207 from ASOS.

Mother's Day | Paula Joye Interview

What has given you the most joy as a mother?
All of it. What did I do with my time before they came along?
Being a Mum is a great privilege.

Best approach to style vs motherhood?
One shouldn't cancel out the other. Obviously when they are
babies you need clothes that are more practical for breast
feeding, playing on the floor, vomit! But really being a
mother shouldn't compromise what you wear

What was the most surprising thing about becoming a mum?
The fatigue. Who knew you could be so tired?!

Best lesson your mum gave you?
Children teach you to be selfless and it's a gift that keeps on giving.

Best advice for maintaining a work/motherhood balance?
There is no such thing. Some days work and some days don't.
I find that just as I manage to get all my plates spinning at
the same time - one crashes.

What does Mother’s Day mean to you?
Cake.

What’s your ideal way to spend Mother’s Day?
With my Mum.

Chicest mum you know?
My grandmother Anne and one of my best girlfriends Penny McCarthy who is Fashion Director of Good Weekend and
Sunday Life.

What’s the most amazing thing about being a mum?
The lessons and the love.

Katies Just Got Cool | Written by Paula Joye

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

This month, I’ve been working with iconic Australian fashion brand Katies on the launch of a new direction for the label.

And you know how much I love a reinvention.

I’ll be honest: it had been a very long time since I’d even been into a Katies store.

Even longer, since I’d bought or worn anything from the label.

But their new Autumn Winter collection turned my preconceptions on their head.

Pastel pink overcoats, duster jackets, skinny jeans, slouchy knits…it’s a collection full of great winter staples.

I’m a long time supporter of high street fashion because I passionately believe that style should be accessible to everyone.

To me, clever dressing is about mixing inexpensive with investment buys and this new direction from Katies goes a long way to helping you trial trends for less.

Here’s a look at the campaign shoot – props to Katies for using an older, real person alongside a glamourous, genetically gifted model – and the AW 2015 range.

But really, you should go in store – see the changes, feel the clothes, rediscover it for yourself…because Katies just got covetable.

The Skinny Jean.

jacket22

Time to move on from pale, baggy and ripped to shreds.

This season you need a pair of sleek flared jeans and pair of these.

Dark-wash, skinny cut with just a hint of distress and cuffs you can roll.

It takes classics like this tweed jacket and slogan tee and toughens them right up.

CLICK TO BUY: Katies Distressed Skinny Jean, $59.95

The Sleeveless Sweater.

You all clapped your hands and said ‘Yes, thanks” when I wore the pale grey cousin of this sweater last month.

I may love the black even more.

Really, I’m just a sucker for a chunky knit that shows a bit of shoulder…
Buy both (black available in May)

The Long Line Vest.

Yes, yes, yes.

This is a hard working piece in any wardrobe.

The Pastel Coat.

This is the piece that started my collaboration journey.

I fell in love with its pastel pink prettiness. It changed my whole opinion of the brand.

It doesn’t hit stores until early May – I will let you know when it does, but I had to share so you can factor into your winter purchases.

It’s $150.

The Soft Jacket.

This is the track top getting an urban make-over.

In soft, eggshell cream with nice hardware and zips, this jacket can be worn casually (as above) or you can use it as a substitute for your favourite work jacket.

One, two three…done.

The Biker Jacket.

I wore this jacket in grey last month and have had so many emails and social post comments about it.

I get it – the shape, the colour, the price.

This is its sister, in traditional black.

You need a biker. You just do.

It also comes in plum and taupe.

Full permission to buy all four colours.

Wearing Winter Grey | Written by Paula Joye

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

Grey is the new navy.

From cardigans and sweaters to ankle boots and biker jackets, if you want to update your wardrobe then buy something in the grey family.

The secret to making it all look effortless is to wear it in exactly the same way you would your other neutrals: a white t-shirt, a black skirt, a cream jumper…insert piece of gorgeous greyness here.
Personally, I’m a sucker for marle anything. Particularly if it’s a knit. I also love wearing grey with crisp white, pale pink, and show me a woman who doesn’t look amazing in a grey sweater, blue jeans and a slick of red lipstick.

Seriously. Find me one.

Here’s some affordable buys that will sprinkle some moody magic over your winter wardrobe.

The Biker Jacket.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

Just look at this jacket… it’s pretty damn good.

The crop, the hardware, the shade…it’s a softer, more feminine alternative to its classic black cousin.

Biker jackets will toughen up any outfit and this one ticks all the right boxes.

Grey, narrow, cropped.

CLICK TO BUY: Grey biker jacket, $89.95 from Katie’s (Available in May) Long sleeved t-shirt, $39.95 from Katie’s; Current Elliot Distressed Skinny Jeans, $364 from ShopBop; Rag & Bone Newbury Booties, $702 from ShopBop

bomber4

And just to underline it’s versatility (and also any excuse to wear a tutu), I’ve dressed it up here, with a grey silk shirt and tonal pumps.

Wear this jacket over everything from my gym gear to a ball gown. It’s the school run, the shops, the office, Sunday breakfast..done.

CLICK TO BUY: Brett shirt in Gunmetal, $124 from Equipment, Grey biker jacket, $89.95 from Katie’s (Available in May) My own vintage tutu, Grey pumps from Saint Laurent.

The Over-Sized Roll Neck.

output_eFmASv

Grey and wool go together like Paris and Autumn.

Few things are prettier than a soft, storm cloud sweater.

This oversized jumper is the great addition to your knitwear wardrobe and the lack of sleeves makes it an all year round buy.

When choosing a roll neck, look for large, textured weave and a relaxed, loose neck line.
This one is as soft as a kitten.

CLICK TO BUY: Sleeveless Roll Neck Sweater, $39.95 from Katie’s

Tweed Blazer.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

Sometimes a hint of grey is a all you need and it’s great way to extend all your black work basics.

Try switching out you favourite blazer with a tweed jacket like this one. Team it with pants, skirts, shrugged over the shoulders of a little black dress.

It will give any corporate outfit a nice kick along.

The cut on this jacket suggests a much higher tag. It fits really well and I like how narrow it is through the arms and across the shoulders.

CLICK TO BUY: Tibi black camisole, $276 from Matches Fashion; Tweed cropped blazer, $69.95 from Katie’s; Black leather pumps, $555.86 from Saint Laurent. Skirt from Joseph. Bag from Chanel.

The Wrap Cardigan.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

Every woman needs a Marilyn cardigan moment.

Those pictures of her on the beach (her final sitting before she died) forever changed the way I viewed the humble cardi.

I mean….

marilyn

A long wrap-style cardigan in soft grey marle is a true wardrobe friend. Choose a style that is lightweight enough to layer under a coat or blazer.

This type of cardigan is genius for travelling – keeps you warm, doesn’t crush and rolls up to nothing.
