The Accessories Edit | Written by Iris May Style

Life, for all of us is well, super busy.

We dash from day-to-day, with to-do list’s a plenty, trying to jam-pack as much in to each and everyday as possible.

On top of that, we still have to think about what we are going to wear.
Hard work? Yes, it can be.

Sometimes, I can forget how simple it is to change an outfit with accessories…yes, me.
Even I can get caught in a rut too.

Grabbing the same things for quickness, because its easy/or because you’re probably madly in love with them.

Means we ignore a high percentage of our wardrobe – please tell me I’m not the only one?
Which unfortunately leads to the rest of our clobber feeling left out, patiently waiting on the sidelines, begging to be noticed.

But sometimes the simple things can look the most effective.

Start with the basics.

My go-to favourite piece of clothing has always been jeans.
I just love them.

Jeans and a white tee are the best starting block for any wardrobe.

Every girl deserves to own a great pair of jeans (or Ms. Jeans’ comfy sister Ms. Jegging).
They don’t need to cost a fortune, but the do need to feel a million bucks.

I just refuse to be uncomfortable in my jeans these days.

Mid-High Rise are my favourite, with an added touch of stretch for comfort if you don’t mind!

To go with those fabulous jeans, there is nothing nicer than a cracking white tee – which gives you the basis of a perfect outfit.

Note:

If you manage to nail the fit and cut of a white tee, my advice is simple: buy a couple…take this from someone who has learned their lesson.

I prefer my tee’s to be v-neck, made of good quality cotton or linen with a touch of stretch and a crisp ice-white finish – but they are super-difficult to find.

Hence, when I do find one I absolutely adore, I wear it to death – then go into a blind panic to try to find another.

I’m in that looking stage now…if by any chance you see a fab cotton v-neck that’s not too baggy, can you let me know?

As I mentioned in this post these Katies jeans are sublime to wear. They tick all my boxes.
My bloggy mate Kimbalikes swears by them too.

Anyway, now I’ve set the stage – let’s add some pizzazz!

Tell me you love a trench as much as I do?

They are so versatile and hide a multitude of sins I’m the clumsy one, that always manages to spill stuff down herself. They are the perfect cover-up.

Although the trench is one of the main Autumnal must-haves – I have loved them forever.
My wardrobe is never without one.

Back in the Motherland – I had trench’s a plenty. In every colour you can imagine.
So this lightweight one from Katies was right up my street.

The Accessories Edit
Katies Trench* (no longer online but still available in some stores)

Weight-wise, its perfect around these parts BUT it could easily be layered if there is a nip-in-the-air in your neck of the woods.

A trench is the perfect accessory to change-up many an outfit and one that should never be forgotten as an accessory.

Yep, you heard me accessory. That’s what a trench is to me.

Throw it over your shoulders for an instant hit of cool sophistication.
It will quite simply transform your outfit.

Another A/W must-have is the blanket wrap.

The Accessories Edit
Zig Zac Wrap $49.95 * Katies

Now I love my scarves, so I guess it was a no-brainer, that I would fall for the blanket wrap.

Again, just like the trench, throw it over your shoulders Mexican Rancher Style or belt it for a more form-fitting look.

But whatever you do, don’t underestimate the statement just one wrap can make to an outfit.

Think zero to hero in a second flat – same with the trench.

They just work.

Or why not treat yourself to some new jewellery.

Jewellery has streamlined itself this season.

It’s delicate and lightweight – but that doesn’t mean that its understated appearance looks any less special.

Cute and geometric is everywhere and basically goes with everything!

The Accessory Edit
Cut Out Shape Necklace $29.95 * Katies

Or how about adding a Tribal feel, I love earthy-muted palettes to jazz up a simple outfit?

IMG_5282 close-up

Necklace from Katies – check in store to see when this piece will arrive.

I’ve tried to show this how the blanket wrap stays on when I’m moving around (it really does stay in place) plus a couple of extra trench pic’s too.

So next time you feel like your wardrobe is in need of an injection of something different, take a moment to ask yourself if a few key accessories pieces might just do the trick.

If you see a fabulous scarf, belt, shoes, jewellery or bag that is love-at-first-sight – snap it up!

Your wardrobe passion will be sparked in a heartbeat.

Are you an accessories girl? Have you added a blanket wrap, trench or cape to your A/W wardrobe?

Bev,

Mother's Day | Paula Joye Interview

What has given you the most joy as a mother?
All of it. What did I do with my time before they came along?
Being a Mum is a great privilege.

Best approach to style vs motherhood?
One shouldn't cancel out the other. Obviously when they are
babies you need clothes that are more practical for breast
feeding, playing on the floor, vomit! But really being a
mother shouldn't compromise what you wear

What was the most surprising thing about becoming a mum?
The fatigue. Who knew you could be so tired?!

Best lesson your mum gave you?
Children teach you to be selfless and it's a gift that keeps on giving.

Best advice for maintaining a work/motherhood balance?
There is no such thing. Some days work and some days don't.
I find that just as I manage to get all my plates spinning at
the same time - one crashes.

What does Mother’s Day mean to you?
Cake.

What’s your ideal way to spend Mother’s Day?
With my Mum.

Chicest mum you know?
My grandmother Anne and one of my best girlfriends Penny McCarthy who is Fashion Director of Good Weekend and
Sunday Life.

What’s the most amazing thing about being a mum?
The lessons and the love.

Katies Just Got Cool | Written by Paula Joye

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

This month, I’ve been working with iconic Australian fashion brand Katies on the launch of a new direction for the label.

And you know how much I love a reinvention.

I’ll be honest: it had been a very long time since I’d even been into a Katies store.

Even longer, since I’d bought or worn anything from the label.

But their new Autumn Winter collection turned my preconceptions on their head.

Pastel pink overcoats, duster jackets, skinny jeans, slouchy knits…it’s a collection full of great winter staples.

I’m a long time supporter of high street fashion because I passionately believe that style should be accessible to everyone.

To me, clever dressing is about mixing inexpensive with investment buys and this new direction from Katies goes a long way to helping you trial trends for less.

Here’s a look at the campaign shoot – props to Katies for using an older, real person alongside a glamourous, genetically gifted model – and the AW 2015 range.

But really, you should go in store – see the changes, feel the clothes, rediscover it for yourself…because Katies just got covetable.

The Skinny Jean.

Time to move on from pale, baggy and ripped to shreds.

This season you need a pair of sleek flared jeans and pair of these.

Dark-wash, skinny cut with just a hint of distress and cuffs you can roll.

It takes classics like this tweed jacket and slogan tee and toughens them right up.

This is the piece that started my collaboration journey.

I fell in love with its pastel pink prettiness. It changed my whole opinion of the brand.

It doesn’t hit stores until early May – I will let you know when it does, but I had to share so you can factor into your winter purchases.

It’s $150.

The Soft Jacket.

Autumn | Katies Style | Written by Bev from Iris May Style

Not sure what the weather is doing in your neck of the woods, but here in SE QLD nearly everyone is itching for some cooler temps.

Autumn is not really showing its face much around these parts of late.

Most days, temps are still nudging 30 degrees and unless you seek shelter in some Icelandic aircon, its almost impossible to get excited about Autumn/Winter clothes.

But think on beauties, don’t let the sunshine lull you into a false sense of security when it comes to getting your key A/W pieces sorted.

Because happen it will, and when it does, you need to be ready.

I know my southern friends are already having a taste of what A/W is really like…I may be a touch jealous!

Anyhoo, if you’re new around here. You need to know this:

I’m the kinda girl who hyper-ventilates when it comes to making sure all her bases are covered for my wardrobe staples.

Yes, I’ll admit, I can get a tad over-excited when something new sparks interest on my fashion-radar.
Especially so, if I believe I can incorporate/translate the latest trend without compromising my style personality.

Yes, style personality. We all have one. It’s what makes us unique.

Sometimes, I may run with a trend and fall head-over-heels – Hello drop crotch pants. YOU ARE MINE.

Or maybe if I’m a bit unsure, I’ll just offer a nod in that direction.

Either way, I either full on embrace or find a way to have fun.

One thing is for sure, my wardrobe holds no room for regret.

So in my quest to get myself A/W ready a few key pieces have mysteriously found their way into my robe…

Jeans | Window Pane Trench | Biker Jacket

The gorgeous Sonia Styling first brought Katies jeans to my attention last year – it goes without saying, I brought them, right?

I fell in love with just how versatile and comfortable they were.

So I was super-excited to try the new Super Shaper Jeggings.

Anything that says super and shaper in the same sentence deserves my attention – don’t you agree?
Did I mention the price? $49.95

Hell Yeah. I know!

Autumn: Katies Style

Super Shaper Jeans in Dark Denim* (I’m wearing a 12) $49.95 | 3/4 sleeve Hi Lo Pullover* $39.95 | Iris Heels from Country Road (Last Season)

They feel super supportive in all the right places, besides being thick enough to disguise any lumps and bumps that well, quite frankly, need disguising;)

So here’s a couple of way’s I’ll be wearing mine:

Anything monochrome ALWAYS gets my vote on the style stakes….you can take the girl out of England, but you can’t take England out of the girl – blame the weather!

Add some window pane check and BAM the jeggings are still there doing their thing, but the trench now becomes the hero.

Autumn: Katies Style

Window Pane Check Trench* $89.95 | Jeans and shoes as above
This outfit would take me almost anywhere.

Perfect for travelling due to the comfort factor of the jeggings, but still smart enough for a city lunch or a date with your girlfriends.

Add a great bag and your favourite sunnies and you’re good-to-go.

The soft trench is one of my key recommendations for the season.

Throw it over mucky jeans and a tee for a touch of school-Mum glam…no one will ever know what’s lurking underneath – I promise you will still look tres-chic!

Or simply belt it for a more slimline silhouette.

Another A/W trend that refuses to go away is Biker Style.

Autumn: Katies Style

Front Zip PU Jacket* $89.95 | Graphic Print Shirt*$49.95 | Jeans as above | Tatiana Pumps from Nine West $139.95

To be honest, I can’t ever remember a time when my wardrobe didn’t have at least one leather jacket hanging on the rail.

I love the added texture it offers to soft fabrics and denim.

But, unless you have a shed load of cash to part with, I suggest considering pleather.

You get all the benefits without lying awake at night worrying about your poor old bank balance.
Just so you know, everyone that has seen this jacket, actually thought it was leather.

I could easily have opted for traditional black, but instead, I wanted the lift that cream offers denim.

You probably already know I’m more than a tad obsessed with anything winter white anyway – so I just couldn’t pass this beauty by…in fact, if you look close enough I think it has my name plastered all over it;)

The most important thing about the latest trends is to realise they are just that.

Enjoy them, have some fun, but don’t lose who you are in the process.

Instead make the look your own

Wearing Winter Grey | Written by Paula Joye

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

Grey is the new navy.

From cardigans and sweaters to ankle boots and biker jackets, if you want to update your wardrobe then buy something in the grey family.

The secret to making it all look effortless is to wear it in exactly the same way you would your other neutrals: a white t-shirt, a black skirt, a cream jumper…insert piece of gorgeous greyness here.
Personally, I’m a sucker for marle anything. Particularly if it’s a knit. I also love wearing grey with crisp white, pale pink, and show me a woman who doesn’t look amazing in a grey sweater, blue jeans and a slick of red lipstick.

Seriously. Find me one.

Here’s some affordable buys that will sprinkle some moody magic over your winter wardrobe.

The Biker Jacket.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

Just look at this jacket… it’s pretty damn good.

The crop, the hardware, the shade…it’s a softer, more feminine alternative to its classic black cousin.

Biker jackets will toughen up any outfit and this one ticks all the right boxes.

Grey, narrow, cropped.

CLICK TO BUY: Grey biker jacket, $89.95 from Katie’s (Available in May) Long sleeved t-shirt, $39.95 from Katie’s; Current Elliot Distressed Skinny Jeans, $364 from ShopBop; Rag & Bone Newbury Booties, $702 from ShopBop

bomber4

And just to underline it’s versatility (and also any excuse to wear a tutu), I’ve dressed it up here, with a grey silk shirt and tonal pumps.

Wear this jacket over everything from my gym gear to a ball gown. It’s the school run, the shops, the office, Sunday breakfast..done.

CLICK TO BUY: Brett shirt in Gunmetal, $124 from Equipment, Grey biker jacket, $89.95 from Katie’s (Available in May) My own vintage tutu, Grey pumps from Saint Laurent.

The Over-Sized Roll Neck.

output_eFmASv

Grey and wool go together like Paris and Autumn.

Few things are prettier than a soft, storm cloud sweater.

This oversized jumper is the great addition to your knitwear wardrobe and the lack of sleeves makes it an all year round buy.

When choosing a roll neck, look for large, textured weave and a relaxed, loose neck line.
This one is as soft as a kitten.

CLICK TO BUY: Sleeveless Roll Neck Sweater, $39.95 from Katie’s

Tweed Blazer.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

Sometimes a hint of grey is a all you need and it’s great way to extend all your black work basics.

Try switching out you favourite blazer with a tweed jacket like this one. Team it with pants, skirts, shrugged over the shoulders of a little black dress.

It will give any corporate outfit a nice kick along.

The cut on this jacket suggests a much higher tag. It fits really well and I like how narrow it is through the arms and across the shoulders.

CLICK TO BUY: Tibi black camisole, $276 from Matches Fashion; Tweed cropped blazer, $69.95 from Katie’s; Black leather pumps, $555.86 from Saint Laurent. Skirt from Joseph. Bag from Chanel.

The Wrap Cardigan.

paula-joye-katies-what-i-wore

Every woman needs a Marilyn cardigan moment.

Those pictures of her on the beach (her final sitting before she died) forever changed the way I viewed the humble cardi.

I mean….

marilyn

A long wrap-style cardigan in soft grey marle is a true wardrobe friend. Choose a style that is lightweight enough to layer under a coat or blazer.

This type of cardigan is genius for travelling – keeps you warm, doesn’t crush and rolls up to nothing.

Katies New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is billed as the biggest party of the year.  It's the time we farewell the current year and welcome the next one.  A time to look back and reflect.  A time to look forward and plan.  It's also the perfect opportunity to get your party on!

New Year's Eve isn't just about dancing til dawn and quaffing cocktails in nightclubs.  There are lots of ways to celebrate with family and friends.  I've put together some fun outfit options for some family friendly New Year's Eve celebrations.

New Year's Eve at the beach

Head to the beach for family fun in the sun!  Throw your stuff in your Katies beach bag, pop on a shady hat and kick off your leather sandals.  Slip a pretty sunfrock over your swimmers to head to the cafe for lunch.

New Year's Eve watching the fireworks

Australia is famous for its New Year's Eve fireworks.  They are viewed around the world - but we can see them perched around harbours and rivers.  Aren't we the lucky ones?

Comfort is paramount for viewing the fireworks, but you still want to look glamorous.  It's New Year's Eve after all!  I'm loving Katies soft pant range, and these vibrant beetroot red hammered satin pants are comfy yet glam.  Team them with a tank with a twist - like the stylish Cut Out Lace Strap Top.  Accessorise with a handy bag, a colourful scarf to ward against chills and some simple jewellery pieces.

New Year's Eve barbecue with friends

The good old Aussie barbecue with friends is a fabulous way to ring in the New Year.  Load up the esky (chilly bin if you're from New Zealand like me) with drinks and snacks, throw some snags on the barbie and toast the new year with your besties.  You won't be queuing for nightclub loos or at the bar for overpriced cocktails, but you can still get dressed up.  I'm loving the Katies summer dress range, with details like hi lo hemlines, intricate straps and cutout details.  Elegance AND comfort plus lots of fun too!  I'll be rocking the Neck Detail Hi Lo Dress this summer with heels and an embellished clutch for a night out, and with flat sandals and a cross body bag for day time.

However you spend your New Year's Eve this year, I hope you are happy and healthy and surrounded by the people you love.  Thanks for letting me hang out with you this year!  I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Top Picks For The New Year

There’s nothing quite like the ending of one year and the beginning of another, is there?

A fresh start. A new beginning. Another chapter.
It’s also the perfect opportunity to take stock of your wardrobe and breathe new life into it by identifying the gaps and adding some gorgeous new pieces.
Case in point: the dress.

This season, there are 3 must own dresses every woman should have hanging in her wardrobe:

1 | The Little Black Dress (otherwise known as the LBD)
The LBD is perfect for any occasion that requires a bit of dressing up. Classic, timeless and elegant, all the LBD needs is some simple and beautiful accessories and you are good to go. Opt for accents of silver, beading and black for a sophisticated and sexy look.

2 | The Striped Number
The striped dress is a sassy little option, perfect for a BBQ or drinks at the pub. Add some pops of colour in the form of earrings and a satchel bag and tie in natural elements in the form of a wooden cuff. Cute and casual!

3 | The Showstopper
The showstopper needs no introduction. It’s the dress you turn to when you want to make a statement. Let the dress do all the talking and keep accessories simple with muted metallics and a complementary pop of colour. This is the dress to turn heads this summer.

Remember, a dress is an instant outfit that needs only a little bit of styling in the form of accessories.

Have a few perfect frocks hanging in your wardrobe and you’ll never be at a loss for what to wear.

3 Outfits for Christmas Day

I can’t believe Christmas is almost here! Where the heck did the time go?

Hopefully by now, the wreath is on the front door and all the gifts have been bought, wrapped and placed underneath the Christmas tree.

So that just leaves one more thing to check off the list – an outfit for Christmas Day!
I’ve long had a tradition where I treat myself to something new to wear for Christmas. It makes me feel special and happy and is a lovely self-gift (something we don’t tend to do often enough as women).

There are some key considerations when choosing the perfect outfit for a day where it’s all about eating, drinking and being merry, and I’ve managed to put together 3 outfits from Katies that are comfortable, stylish and perfect for Christmas Day.

The Shift Dress
The shift dress is a simple and easy ensemble that is classic and gorgeous. If you are a little on the curvy side, like me, go up a size to ensure a comfortable fit across the hips. It’s meant to look relaxed and effortless (and allow for an extra serve of ham).

The Soft Pant & Relaxed Fit Top
Repeat after me: an elasticised waist is my friend! These satin pants are a great way to add a touch of luxe while maintaining a relaxed fit. Pair them with a lovely loose fitting top and you have a fabulous outfit that effortlessly mixes glam with comfort.

The Ruffle Front Dress
Another beautiful dress option features the ultimate camouflage detail – the ruffle front. Pretty, flowy and a great way to add a pop of colour to your outfit. This dress slips on and off easily and is versatile enough to be worn casually during the day or glammed up for night.

Wishing you a fabulous and fashionable Katies Christmas!

Fashion Forecast: Tribal

Are you ready to go native? The tribal trend took over the runways for Spring/Summer 2014.  Prada, Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Valentino and Emilio Pucci all featured this theme with tribal-inspired, exotic collections.

You can create this look for a fraction of the price at Katies.  Look for bold, graphic, ikat or geometric prints, monochrome or bright neon paired with warm, earthy tones (black, browns, deep reds and oranges). Wear with African style accessories, think fringing, feathers, chandelier earrings and beaded jewellery or natural accents like a straw hat/bag or chunky wooden bangles.

Don’t be afraid to mix tribal prints and accessorise with a vibrant, solid colour that compliments the print.
