MOTHER'S DAY / SONIA BAVISTOCK

Whenever I’m buying a gift for someone, there’s always one word that dominates my thoughts…
Fabulous.

Besides being one of my favourite words in the English language, it’s also the word I live to hear when someone unwraps a gift I’ve chosen for them.
Even the person who would never normally utter the word can’t help but exclaim, “It’s fabulous!” when you give them something they really love.

So with Mother’s Day on the horizon, it’s time to turn my gift giving gaze towards the fabulous women in my life who are mums but most of all, my friends.

Women like my mother-in-law, Carolyn.

Little did I realise when I met my husband, I would also gain a great friend in the form of Carolyn.
Not only is she an incredibly kind, giving and thoughtful person, she’s also a lot of fun to spend time with. We can chat for hours over a cup of tea (or glass of bubbles) and we both share a love of the fabulous things in life.

Things like fashion, naturally!

Carolyn is a Katies fan just like me, so you can guarantee that’s exactly where I’ll be heading this year to buy her gift.

I’m thinking a gift card could be just the ticket, so that we can have a lovely girls’ day out with some shopping at Katies together, followed by lunch and a cheeky glass of something sparkling.
What I’ll be wearing this Mother’s Day

For me, when it comes to Mother’s Day, I like to wear an outfit that’s comfortable and fairly casual, yet still stylish and on-trend. And Katies fits the bill.

At this time of year, the weather in my hometown of Adelaide can be quite unpredictable, so this is when I call upon the magic of layering.

I start with a never-fail base of jeans that are fitted and flattering, but with just the right amount of stretch to enjoy lunch. Add to that a gorgeous lightweight grey knit top with white and grey chiffon detail along the hem, for a feminine touch. Next up, a little bit of bling in the form of a statement necklace. And finally, the finishing touches of a luxuriously soft check scarf, felt fedora hat and boho crossbody bag with tassel detail.

Et voila, I’m ready for a fabulous Mother’s Day lunch!

WHAT SONIA WORE: KATIES 100% SILK COLLECTION

Guest post by www.soniastyling.com

There’s something so incredibly luxurious about silk.
It’s soft, cool and wearable. It has an understated sophistication to it. It’s the perfect choice for our Australian lifestyle. And in an exciting fashion development, Katies has created our favourite new looks for summer in 100% silk.

Available in store and online from 10 November 2015, the collection features 100% silk dresses and kaftan tops in exclusive prints, with prices starting from $89.95.

I was lucky enough to get my hot little hands on 3 gorgeous items from the collection {before they even hit the stores, no less!} and they inspired me to put together 3 different looks perfect for upcoming summer occasions.

Look #1: The Casual BBQ Outfit

Has it started? You know what I’m talking about. Have your friends started calling or emailing you, saying you need to arrange a catch up before Christmas? Mine have – and I can’t quite wrap my head around it just yet!

Regardless of the blindingly obvious fact that the year is speeding towards its conclusion, summer means one thing above everything else in Australia: BBQs.
To elevate the stock standard jeans and t-shirt combo that’s a weekend wardrobe favourite of mine, I’m loving this 100% silk kaftan top. Not only does the print create a point of interest, it also creates camouflage. Which means you can help yourself to an extra helping of dessert. Yes please!

To complete the look, rock a pair of cute and comfortable block heels if your get together is dressy casual or alternatively, a pair of sandals in black, neutral or metallic would look equally fabulous.

Look #2: The Christmas Party Outfit

I’ve long said a dress is an instant outfit: pop one on and you’re good to go.
I also believe a woman can never own too many dresses – and you can quote me on that!

November seems to have become the new December when it comes to events. Everyone’s social calendars are bursting at the seams as we try to squeeze in one more Christmas party or dinner or concert. And this is when having a selection of beautiful dresses hanging in your wardrobe will be your saviour. A collection of instant outfits ready to go.

For a Christmas party, my pick is this printed dress. The print adds a pop of colour without being overwhelming and details such as the cutaway neckline with button closure and subtle décolletage cut-out add a touch of femininity.

In order for the dress to be the star of the outfit {as it rightly should be} I have kept jewellery to an absolute minimum and opted for a simple style of neutral heel.

Look #3: The New Year’s Eve Outfit

Have you worked out what you’re doing for New Year’s Eve yet?

This year, I’d like to do something different. My plan is to find a fantastic restaurant or venue that has a delicious menu, great wine list and excellent entertainment. I’m handing over the entire (exhausting) planning of a NYE soiree to someone else and I’m very excited about that!

No matter your plans, this lovely coral number would be the perfect option. It features the same details as its printed counterpart – the cutaway neckline with button closure and subtle décolletage cut-out – and can easily be dressed up or down with a change of shoes and accessories.

The colour is incredibly complementary and works oh-so-well with the metal of the moment – rose gold. I’ve selected a hoop style of earring and layered bracelets to create a stylish arm party everyone will want to be invited to. To finish the look, a neutral block heel means I can dominate the dance floor without my feet cutting the night short.

These items are simply stunning and I just know they’re going to be snapped up in a hurry, so head online or into your local store to get your hands on your very own piece of the Katies 100% silk collection for summer.

Luxurious silk for under $200

Guest post by Andrea Michelle, foxinflats.com.au

Princesses wear silk, right? Well, that’s how it always seemed in fairy tales, especially when there was a handsome single Prince within earshot. They were swathed in the stuff. So since I was a little girl I was gunning to drape myself in the luxurious fabric too.

My very first outfit made from silk was in Year 10. Silk taffeta to be specific. Electric blue silk taffeta with padded shoulders a low drop waist and a huge ruffle. I was hoping to channel Diana Ross in the video clip to ‘Chain Reaction’ but instead, my school formal frock looked more like a big shapeless sack with an awkward rah rah skirt tacked onto the bottom. The dressmaker in our suburb really wasn’t that much chop. Regardless, I felt like a Princess because: silk!

Fast forward a few decades and I still adore wearing silk. Not silk taffeta, but feather soft, luxe, draped pieces that whisper effortless, classic style. Yet quality 100% silk garments are so expensive, it’s not a luxury that can be worn everyday.

Enter Katies – galloping in like a Prince to rescue this fashion conundrum - with a new capsule range of 100% silk dresses and kaftan tops, priced from $89.95 - $129.95.

100% Silk Kaftan Tops

Soft, cool and wearable, a silk kaftan top is a classic addition to any summer wardrobe. Team it with crisp white jeans, or your favourite shorts, for an effortless look.

100% Silk Dresses

Beautifully draped, Katies silk dresses are buttery soft against the skin – all the better for swishing around in! With a fluid, universally flattering shape, this is the perfect go-anywhere dress for summer. Dress it down with flat sandals or a low wedge, or add heels for a touch of glamour.

Top Picks For The New Year

There’s nothing quite like the ending of one year and the beginning of another, is there?

A fresh start. A new beginning. Another chapter.
It’s also the perfect opportunity to take stock of your wardrobe and breathe new life into it by identifying the gaps and adding some gorgeous new pieces.
Case in point: the dress.

This season, there are 3 must own dresses every woman should have hanging in her wardrobe:

1 | The Little Black Dress (otherwise known as the LBD)
The LBD is perfect for any occasion that requires a bit of dressing up. Classic, timeless and elegant, all the LBD needs is some simple and beautiful accessories and you are good to go. Opt for accents of silver, beading and black for a sophisticated and sexy look.

2 | The Striped Number
The striped dress is a sassy little option, perfect for a BBQ or drinks at the pub. Add some pops of colour in the form of earrings and a satchel bag and tie in natural elements in the form of a wooden cuff. Cute and casual!

3 | The Showstopper
The showstopper needs no introduction. It’s the dress you turn to when you want to make a statement. Let the dress do all the talking and keep accessories simple with muted metallics and a complementary pop of colour. This is the dress to turn heads this summer.

Remember, a dress is an instant outfit that needs only a little bit of styling in the form of accessories.

Have a few perfect frocks hanging in your wardrobe and you’ll never be at a loss for what to wear.

3 Outfits for Christmas Day

I can’t believe Christmas is almost here! Where the heck did the time go?

Hopefully by now, the wreath is on the front door and all the gifts have been bought, wrapped and placed underneath the Christmas tree.

So that just leaves one more thing to check off the list – an outfit for Christmas Day!
I’ve long had a tradition where I treat myself to something new to wear for Christmas. It makes me feel special and happy and is a lovely self-gift (something we don’t tend to do often enough as women).

There are some key considerations when choosing the perfect outfit for a day where it’s all about eating, drinking and being merry, and I’ve managed to put together 3 outfits from Katies that are comfortable, stylish and perfect for Christmas Day.

The Shift Dress
The shift dress is a simple and easy ensemble that is classic and gorgeous. If you are a little on the curvy side, like me, go up a size to ensure a comfortable fit across the hips. It’s meant to look relaxed and effortless (and allow for an extra serve of ham).

The Soft Pant & Relaxed Fit Top
Repeat after me: an elasticised waist is my friend! These satin pants are a great way to add a touch of luxe while maintaining a relaxed fit. Pair them with a lovely loose fitting top and you have a fabulous outfit that effortlessly mixes glam with comfort.

The Ruffle Front Dress
Another beautiful dress option features the ultimate camouflage detail – the ruffle front. Pretty, flowy and a great way to add a pop of colour to your outfit. This dress slips on and off easily and is versatile enough to be worn casually during the day or glammed up for night.

Wishing you a fabulous and fashionable Katies Christmas!

Summer Shoe Edit with Sonia

Shoes are the full stop to an outfit’s sentence.

The right pair of shoes can elevate an outfit from good to great (and that has absolutely nothing to do with the heel height, either!).

There are 3 shoe trends we should all be running towards this Summer –
the slide, the wedge and the block heel – and they suit just about everyone.
Here’s how to rock them with confidence and with Katies…

The Slide
Slides are the hot weather must have sandal this season.
They’re cute and comfortable and look great styled casually with a shorter length dress (think knee length or above) or with tailored shorts and flowy top.
To amp up the glam factor, go for a metallic finish in silver or gold.

White Dress available in selected stores

The Wedge
This season, the wedge heel is back in a big way.
And what’s not to love? You get the extra height with extra support!
Rock the boho look with a maxi dress and wedges or go for effortless cool by pairing them with printed pants/soft pants and a tank.

Ruffle Dress available in selected stores

The Block Heel
Pop those skinny stiletto heels away for another day; the bulkier block heel is here to stay!
A cool, edgy and modern take on the high heel, the sturdier block heel offers an inch or two of height without sacrificing comfort, blending practicality and polish.
The block heel looks great with just about anything – denim shorts, dresses, skirts, pants – the works!

What shoe trends will you be dipping your toe into this Summer?

GUEST EDIT: The Hottest Trends This Summer with Vanessa

Blue Maxi with White Jacket

"The colours of Santorini" is always what comes to mind when I see the classic summer combo of blue and white. Thankfully the Katies Summer range features these colours in ample measure, so I was spoilt for choice in putting this look together. I loved this maxi dress for it's flattering cut, its comfortability, and it's ability to be dressed up or down. Adding the tailored crisp white denim jacket really pulled the look together. I'm also a fan of the asymmetric hemline. Not only is this on-trend, it lightens the feel of the dress and allows you to show off a little more of your summer glow (I still need to master that part!)

Denim Skirt with Spotted T-Shirt

When the pencil skirt came back into fashion this season, I could not have been happier. For somebody who lives in denim, it is always great to find options that allow you to wear your favourite go-to's in new (and need I say, sexy!) ways.  For a slightly retro look, I teamed this denim skirt with a micro polka dotted t-shirt, and red accessories. The bright red heels and belt dress up the look and give the whole thing a little "POP". Red lipstick was also a must. I would wear this look to meetings or casual work events, this is a very versatile outfit that I feel ladylike and comfortable in.

Monochrome

These black linen pants are giving my relationship with denim a run for it's money. I have LIVED in these pants since I got them! The relaxed casual fit is so flattering and right on-trend. I love the tapered leg (not too wide), and the drawstring waist provides a "sports luxe" vibe that is modern yet super-comfortable. Whilst these pants look great with any number of tops from the Katies collection, I decided to stay "monochrome" with this outfit, simply teaming the bottoms with a basic white singlet (tucked in is a MUST) and minimalistic leather slides. Whilst this simple outfit is made for running around in, it also feels quite sophisticated. You can't beat black and white.

GUEST EDIT: Dogs Are A Girls Best Friend with Sonia

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but I beg to differ.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a diamond as much as the next girl, however there’s something else that shines much brighter in my life.

Our dog, Amalfi.

A little ball of fluff with a big personality, he has brought so much joy and love to our lives, we just couldn’t imagine our world without him.

It’s especially lovely to come home from work and see that little face, so excited to see you. And no matter how crappy a day I’ve had, I always feel instantly better the minute I cuddle Amalfi.

He’s also great for getting us out of the house for a walk to the park, where he can catch up with his other 4-legged friends and burn off some of that seemingly never-ending energy.

Amalfi is a hit with other dogs and people, and is quite well known in our neighbourhood.

I’ve always joked that we should get him into dog modeling (if such an industry exists) and so it’s kind of cool that he gets to make his modeling debut here on the Katies blog!

He makes a pretty cute accessory, don’t you think?

Yep, I’ve got my diamonds – and I love them – but Amalfi really is my best friend.

GUEST EDIT: Linen | The Summer Staple with Madeleine Burke

I love linen for a lot of reasons. It’s comfortable, it’s light, it’s ok not to iron it within an inch of it’s life.

A few linen pieces are the perfect staples for your Summer wardrobe. Mix them with other statement pieces to create different looks that can take you from a lunch out with the family, to the poolside for a drink with the girls or even a party in the evening.

Not sure how? Wilma and I have taken a few fun Summer selfies to show just how easy it is with two of the pieces from the amazing linen range in this season’s Katies collection.

Black Linen Pants

Who would wear black pants in summer? If they’re linen, I would. As a perpetual dropper of everything, I much prefer sticking with safe black over the traditional white linen pant even in the heat.

The perfect lunch outfit, match them with a statement tee like the striped, shoulder zip tee and brighten it with a bold watermelon lip. Tuck along a light cardigan and you’re prepared for any weather we’re thrown.

The perfect poolside cover-up the linen pants are quick to dry and can be rolled at the cuff to even dip your feet in. Bring these into an evening outfit by teeing them with a simple black top and statement necklace.

White Linen Jacket

The perfect protection from the sun a white linen jacket keeps you cool and protected.

Worn with patterned pants it becomes a simple, sleek outfit that will see you through many a summer lunch.

For a casual day at the beach team this light jacket with a pair of denim shorts or skirt.

For evening wear it with black wet-look jeans and a statement top to keep it light but still tailored.

GUEST EDIT: Update Your Look with Sonia Styling

“I’ve got nothing to wear!”

Probably the most common phrase uttered by women everywhere before heading out to dinner,
a party, coffee with friends, work…

But what we really mean by this universal statement is that we have nothing NEW to wear.
Which, if money were no object, we could rectify by shopping for clothes and shoes on a weekly basis like we do our groceries. However, this isn’t realistic for most of us. Food (and bills) have to come first.

So how can we update our outfits without breaking the bank?
Accessories!

A necklace, set of bracelets or pair of earrings can go a long way in changing up the look of a dress, jeans and t-shirt or corporate attire.

They are inexpensive, add a pop of colour and can transform an outfit from casual to dressy.
The latest jewellery collection from Katies features a range of gorgeous elements including shells, wood, resin and beads. Neutral palettes appear alongside jewel tones – both colour schemes bang on trend for Spring/Summer. And the best part? Prices start from as little as $14.95.

An easy (and affordable) way to update your favourite looks this season.

Blue & green should definitely be seen!

Remember that old saying, “blue and green should never be seen without a colour in between”?
Well, I say phooey to that. It’s time to throw out the fashion rule book and embrace this dynamic colour duo!

Jewel tones are a huge trend for Spring/Summer and the hottest hues right now are definitely green and blue. A colour combination that’s perfect for warm Summer days spent by the ocean or swimming pool, enjoying BBQs, sipping on cocktails and dancing the night away with friends.

Enter Katies’ latest collection – Blue Lagoon.

The colour palette for this collection consists of the ever fashionable monochrome tones of black
and white with pops of blue and green for freshness, as well as Ikat and Paisley prints.

The key features of the Blue Lagoon collection are soft and feminine shapes with layering and proportion play, which make the pieces modern and fashionable. Tops are shorter, wide leg pants are cropped and dresses are layered to give a stylish edge to these easy to wear pieces.

My favourite items in this collection are definitely the tops and dresses. In my opinion, you can
never have too many of either! Tops are a simple and affordable way to update your wardrobe
and can be worn with your favourite jeans.

Dresses are an instant outfit and an easy solution for the age old question every woman
asks herself before heading out – “what am I going to wear?”

So here’s to wearing blue and green, because this Summer they should definitely be seen!

Sonia joins the Katies Collective

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Sonia and I live in South Australia with my husband and our puppy, Amalfi. I work in admin by day and I’m a blogger every other second of the day and night. I love fashion, writing and connecting on social media. I’m an avid bargain hunter – I truly believe you can find amazing fashion anywhere; you’ve just got to be open minded. I’m also a chronic over sharer, which is probably a good thing I’m a blogger!

How did the ‘Sonia Styling’ blog journey begin?

I’m a writer at heart and I wanted a place of my own on the internet to communicate and connect, so I created Sonia Styling in October 2013. I wanted it to be a place where I can share my feelings, thoughts and finds. I’m incredibly lucky because I have the most amazing community of people who read what I write and leave such thoughtful comments. I also love helping people, so I get ridiculously excited when I receive a reader request.

What is a typical day in your life? (How do you balance blogging & work etc)

I wake up and the first thing I do is check my phone – tragic but essential! I work full time, so I use my early mornings, lunch-breaks and evenings to check in on social media, promote my posts and answer any questions or comments. I have a notebook with me at all times to write down any ideas that pop into my head and after dinner, I’ll sit down with the laptop and write my blog posts. Basically, I fit my blog into any spare time I might have. I’m still trying to get the balance right, but I think if you’re really passionate about something like I am about my blog, you make time for it.

What is the message behind Sonia Styling and how do you hope it’ll touch the lives of your readers?

I like to think of Sonia Styling as a cool little place to hang out and talk about everything from fashion to life, from the light and fluffy to the deep and serious. Having said all of that, I hope that anyone and everyone feels like Sonia Styling is a blog for them and sees me as their trusted online bestie – the one who loves to help and will always give their honest opinion.

Where do you go for fashion news & inspiration?

I love checking out fabulous Australian blogs (gosh we have so much talent!) and what people are wearing on social media, particularly Instagram and Pinterest. I’m inspired by everyday women and how they put their outfits together – much more attainable and relatable than catwalk models! I also like seeing what my favourite brands are sharing on their Facebook pages.

Do you ever have that girly moment when you simply think ‘I have nothing to wear?’

Every. Single. Day. Doesn’t every woman?!

If you could give our readers one bit of fashion advice what would it be?

Stay true to your personal style: dress for your body shape, personality and lifestyle. Also, have fun with fashion – it’s not rocket surgery!
